My story

Born and raised in Ganvié, I share the history, culture, and traditions of my floating village with travelers from around the world.

My name is Théophile, and I was born and raised in Ganvié Floating Village on Lake Nokoué in southern Benin.

Growing up in the Venice of Africa gave me a deep understanding of the traditions, culture, and daily life of the Toffinou people. The lake, the stilt houses, the fishing activities, and the stories passed down by our ancestors have shaped my identity and my passion for sharing this unique heritage.

Today, I am honored to welcome visitors from around the world and introduce them to the true spirit of Ganvié.

Growing up in Ganvié

Living in one of Africa’s most remarkable villages.

As a child, I traveled by canoe, observed traditional fishing techniques, and learned the history of Ganvié from elders and respected community members.

I experienced firsthand how families live on Lake Nokoué and how the traditions of the Toffinou people continue to guide everyday life. These experiences inspired me to become a local guide dedicated to preserving and sharing the authentic culture of my village.

My experience as a local guide

Over the years, I have welcomed travelers, families, photographers, researchers, and visitors from many countries.

These experiences have taught me that visitors seek more than a boat ride. They want to understand the history of Ganvié, the traditions of the Toffinou people, and the unique way of life on Lake Nokoué.

Because I was born and raised here, every tour offers personal insights, authentic stories, and meaningful connections that make each experience truly unique.

My commitment

Preserving Ganvié for future generations.

As a local guide, I am committed to:

  • Promoting sustainable tourism.
  • Supporting local communities.
  • Preserving cultural heritage.
  • Sharing authentic stories and traditions.
  • Protecting the environment of Lake Nokoué.
  • Providing safe, professional, and memorable experiences.
